What is the natural history of COVID-19?

Nowadays, everyone in this world already knows about Covid-19 virus. From the children, teens, adults to the elderly, everyone is aware about this deadly virus. It all started in December 2019 where a person in Wuhan district, China had been diagnosed with an unknown virus. At that time, he suffered from symptoms such as fever, shortness of breath and also cough. These three symptoms are the trademark of Covid-19 virus. After some research was done regarding this newly found virus, it is later revealed that it is known as Covid-19, it is a new virus, and it is very dangerous. This is because it can easily travel and spread to other people at a very fast rate. In fact, after its first emergence in China, this virus has infected millions of people worldwide. Besides that, it is so deadly because it has already killed thousands of people by then. Thus, prompting the researchers to quickly work on Covid vaccine as this is the only solution when combating a virus invasion.

While the Covid vaccine is being developed, the Covid-19 virus becomes more aggressive. Almost every country in this world was affected by it. Thousands of people lost their jobs, their lives, their loved ones and many believe that this is the end to our mankind. This is why Covid-19 virus was declared as a pandemic by WHO (World Health Organization) in March 2020. Just when we think that the world is doomed, comes some light of hope shining at the end of the tunnel. It is later revealed that Covid vaccine is at its last stage of production and will be ready soon. The world seems very optimistic about this news. Soon after that, Covid vaccines such as Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson and Moderna are available in the market. At that time, countries began to book the vaccines and thus, the Covid-19 vaccination program started.

Different countries have their own way of handing over these vaccines. In Malaysia, our government gave these vaccines for free. The citizens need to book their appointments through apps, at any Covid-19 vaccine center or through call. After months of these vaccination programs, millions of people worldwide had received their completed doses of vaccine. With that being the case, we can see the regression of Covid-19 cases at that time. It feels like we have won the battle and this virus will soon be eradicated from the earth. All of this seems very realistic until we learn that the virus had mutated and formed a new strain of virus, resulting in a stronger form of Covid-19 virus.

Some countries such as the United Kingdom, India and Brazil are among few countries that reported a Delta varian of Covid-19, a stronger form of Covid-19. This varian are reported to give very bad side effects and kills a lot more people than its predecessor. Not long after that, the world then is shocked to learn that the newest varian, called Omicron, is more dangerous than any other Covid-19 varian. We learned that it can easily infect people in just a short amount of time, give very bad symptoms once it has infected a person and worse, kill them in a couple of days. It is known that this varian comes from South Africa, but we still do not know a lot about it. Currently, scientists are doing their best in trying to detect these varians and find a way to eradicate them for good. For now, we can only follow the Covid-19 guidelines and pray that our world is free from Covid-19 pandemic sooner or later.
